Wine Regions of Australia
57Australia currently has one of the best reputations as a wine producer in the world. This is a reputation backed up by its performace in exporting its product. In fact, Australia now exports more wine to the UK, on the other side of the world, than does France which is only 50 miles away.
The great boom in Australian wine has also lead to a boom in people travelling to Australia to partake in wine tours and tasting.
So where should you go when you decide on a wine tour downunder?
Here are a few ideas
New South Wales
The Hunter Valley
Chances are that when you come to Australia you will probably land in Sydney. This is great as it gives you an easy access point to the famous Hunter Valley - one of the premier wine growing regions in Australia.
The Mudgee Wine Region
While the Hunter Valley is the glamour destination, the area around Mudgee actually produces a greater quantity of wine, but is often overlooked. So if you want to taste some of the best wines in Australia, but avoid the tourist crowds, then Mudgee is going to be right up your alley. It receives barely 10% of the tourist traffic of the Hunter region, so you will have no problems finding Mudgee accommodation at one of the 50 odd wineries, not to mention the town of Mudgee itself.
Check out this hub for a list of some of the better Mudgee wineries.
Victoria
Victoria is also home to some of Australia's oldest and best wineries. In fact Penfolds - makers of the famous Penforlds' Grange have several wineries in this area.
The good news is that there are a lot of wineries within striking distance of Melbourne, so you will have no problems finding wine tasting tours!
South Australia
Regarded by many as the home to the best wine growing region in Australia, the state of South Australia with its capital in Adelaide is a must see for any wine lover.
There are literally hundreds of wineries in the state and many are within a day trip of Adelaide.
One of these is the famous Wolf Blass winery to which you can easily organise a tour from Adeliade for a taste test!
Warning: Australia has VERY strict drink driving laws. If you are caught you will be tried in a criminal court and receive a heavy fine. Be safe - take a tour. You won't regret it and you don't have to worry about driving!
